Be Organised

Being organised is the first and most powerful skill a PM must possess. It reduces meetings, frees up creative time and keeps stress levels low. Depending on your experience level you will require different methods to maximise your time. Ideally we all should work smarter not harder…

By establishing clear goals, objectives, and timelines, PMs can create a structured framework for their work that helps them to stay on track and avoid wasting time on nonessential tasks.

This structured approach can also enable PMs to prioritize their workload and allocate time to brainstorming new product features, experiments, designing prototypes, or conducting user research.

Overall, effective organisation not only facilitates the successful delivery of a product but also provides PMs with the time and space to engage in their most creative work, which can ultimately lead to more innovative and successful products.

Be Transparent

The only way to get true autonomy is with highly visible work. When your discovery and delivery is transparent, colleagues and stakeholders can stay updated without endless meetings....

Being transparent in product management is essential for building trust with customers, stakeholders, and team members. Transparency means being open and honest about the decisions, processes, and outcomes that drive the discovery and delivery of a product.

This includes sharing the product roadmap, progress updates, and user feedback. By being transparent, PMs can demonstrate accountability, encourage collaboration, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

It also helps to avoid surprises and misunderstandings, which can lead to frustration and loss of trust.

Ultimately, transparency enables PMs to make more informed decisions, create better products, and build stronger relationships with all stakeholders involved in the product development process.

Be Creative

Creativity thrives when ideas can become hypotheses and beyond. A PM's creativity can be hard to fit into busy schedules. Fostering creativity is often just about applying a creative process.

Being a creative PM can be a valuable asset in today's fast-paced and competitive business landscape. Creative PMs are able to think outside the box, explore innovative solutions, and identify new opportunities for growth.

They are not limited by conventional thinking or traditional approaches and can bring fresh perspectives to the product development process. Creative PMs are also able to leverage their creativity to identify and solve complex problems, develop unique value propositions, and create products that stand out from the competition.

However, being a creative PM also requires effective collaboration, communication, and leadership skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams, gain buy-in from stakeholders, and effectively manage the product development process.

Ultimately, being a creative PM can drive innovation, inspire new ideas, and lead to the creation of products that resonate with customers and generate value for the company.

Learn (Fail) Fast

A Creative idea is only realised when you get it in front of real users. Learning loops show us how we have altered user behaviour towards a desired outcome.

Failing fast is a critical approach in product management that emphasises the importance of quickly identifying and addressing failures or shortcomings in the product development process. Rather than trying to avoid failure altogether, PMs who adopt this approach intentionally seek out failure in order to learn from it and improve the product.

By taking calculated risks and testing out new ideas, PMs can quickly identify what works and what doesn't, and make adjustments accordingly. This iterative process can save time and resources by avoiding wasted effort on ideas that aren't viable or don't resonate with customers.

Failing fast also requires a culture of transparency, open communication, and a willingness to learn from mistakes. By embracing failure as a necessary part of the product development process, PM's can create a culture of continuous improvement and innovation that ultimately leads to better products and more successful outcomes.
